INTRODUCTION
Mazarrón is located south of the community of Murcia, bordering Alhama de Murcia and totana to the North, with Lorca to the West and the Mediterranean Sea to the South with the municipalities of Cartagena and Fuente Álamo in the East. It has an area of 318,7 km² and has a population exceeding thirty thousand inhabitants today.
Its geographical location in the Mediterranean, and specifically in the so-called Gulf of Mazarrón, have provided you a number of features that have been shaping the spirit, fruit of the diversity of peoples and cultures that have settled in its territory.
The oldest testimonies of human occupation in the town date from the Middle Palaeolithic, found in the vicinity of the dam of the lighthouse. The Upper Paleolithic leaves its mark on the caves of Morote and pigeons. In the cave of the like, El Palomarico and Hernandez Ros, found remains of the Solutrean. The upper Magdalenian and early Epipaleolithic is located in the cave of the carob tree. In the Neolithic, the most important site is the Cabezo of lead, in the foothills of the Sierra of the mulberry trees, the culture of the Argar has representative towns in Ifre, Cerrito Garden, Las Toscas of Mary and the vipers. Very important are the archaeological remains from Phoenician colonies found in the beach of the island and Los Gavilanes, the first finding is crucial in the underwater archaeology, as part of a Phoenician ship is removed from him and is projected to the extraction of another that have an antiquity of more than 2600 years. These remains are Mazarrón as point of Phoenician trade in the Mediterranean between Ebusus (Ibiza) and Gañir (Cádiz), to where would be probably attracted by the holdings of silver and lead in this area.
The proximity of the mineral wealth of the region of Mazarron and Cartagena, Spain would attract the Roman colonization, which will occur quickly at the time families appearing archaeological remains from this period in the Loma de Sánchez and Coto fortune. However, true Roman colonization occur between I and the II centuries b.c., found numerous remains of her especially in mining environments of the reefs of Saint Kitts and Perules (located next to the current helmet), Coto fortune and old quarries. The birth of the metallurgical industry reflected in the finding of ovens and slag of foundry, among which stands out from the Loma de las Herrerías will occur as a result of the mining activity. If the mining was the engine that drove the Roman colonization during the centuries II and I a. C. and up to the early years of the 1st century. d. c., the coast will increase its importance thanks to the factories of developing «garum», a kind of salted fish to be exported throughout the Roman Empire, and whose most important remains found in El Mojon and La Azohia, El Castellar, Puerto de Mazarron. We have no news of the times of Visigothic and Byzantine occupation, even if we assume that mining in greater or lesser extent, would continue, however, the general State of disturbance in the peninsula makes us assume that it is not a bright time for mining of Mazarrón. Muslim era had exploit some mines in the Cabezo de San Cristóbal, but the bellicosity of this period make us glimpse that the economy of the municipality would suffer a stoppage.
Conquered the Kingdom of Murcia in 1243, Mazarrón, integrated in Lorca and occupying a border zone faces a stage raids of moriscos and incursions of the Muslims of the Nasrid Kingdom. From the taking of Granada in 1492, it begins the industrial revival in the Kingdom of Murcia. In the middle of the 15th century is discovered «alum», a sulphate of alumina and potassium which was used to set the colors in the textile industry, the development of the glass and medicines, among other applications. Alum, abundant in all this area gave the first name to a group of houses belonging to the municipality of Lorca and called «Houses of the quincentenary of Almazarron».
In the year 1462 Henry IV granted the exploitation to Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena, who in turn ceded half of their rights to Pedro Fajardo, Adelantado Mayor of the Kingdom of Murcia and holder of the Marquis of los Vélez. These organized exploitation of alum personally or through leases. In the year 1572, thanks to the rise of this mining of alum that brought about the settlement of a fixed population around the Cabezo de San Cristóbal, is granted by Philip II, the title of villa, becoming independent municipality of Lorca.
Towards the end of the 16th, starts the decline in the exploitation of the alum motivated by competition from Italian alumbres, excessive taxation and conflict with Flanders and England, which gave rise to be ban export to these countries which were the main market of mazarronero alum. This time of economic boom leaves its mark on the physiognomy of Mazarron through buildings such as the Church of St. Andrew, built under the patronage of the Marquis of Villena; the Church of San Antonio, whose construction is due to the Marquis of los Vélez as annexed to the Castle and the Church of the Purísima, product of different stages, being the most important the corresponding to the 18th century, after the transfer of the same to the Franciscan of San Pedro de Alcantara, who founded by her convent and Hospice.
Once the exploitation of the mines of alum, the almagra declined, it replaced it during the 17TH and 18th centuries, which was bought by the Royal Treasury for the arsenals as well as Seville’s famous colorado tobacco. Esparto cables and belts of ships was also elaborated. Mazarrón will again retrieve its glory towards the end of the 19th century, when the exploitation of iron and argentiferous galena farms will begin. Great importance was the discovery of the Prodigy Philo at the Santa Ana mine, which constituted the main wealth of Mazarrón. One of the consequences of the mining boom was the excessive population boom experienced by Mazarrón, mostly from the neighboring exploitation of Almeria. Railway it served as logistical support to this industry, inaugurated in 1886 was the path of Mazarron port, also operated a railroad that transported the ore from Morata to Parazuelos, where it was shipped for processing.
At the end of the 19th, will be installed the modern Foundry Santa Elisa, owned by the company of Eagles, which will feature major advances in this type of industry. Complementary mining, the exploitation of the salt mines in the port, the fishing and rain-fed agriculture. Halfway through the 20th century, mining virtually disappeared starting a new economic reactivation in the seventies of the 19th century, thanks to intensive, especially in winter tomato farms, and tourism.
